Strategy description

Aerial exhibitionThe ETID is drawn directly from the Defence Planning process, developing the technology lines and R&D policy guidelines established in the defence planning documents. Its main objective is to define the technological roadmap which will guarantee that the Spanish Armed Forces possess the technology needed in the future to fulfill their missions.

The most relevant objectives pursued by the Strategy are:

  • To establish a public reference guide for defence-oriented R&T and technological innovation projects, setting out technological goals to be used as a basis for the prioritization of R&T activities.
  • To coordinate national defence R&T stakeholders to achieve greater efficiency.
  • To cooperate with defence R&T stakeholders (both end-users and technology developers) in defining and conducting technological activities.

Underpinning these objectives is the determination to improve on means and management efficiency, striving to maximise the return on investment in terms of technology, industry, economy and society.

The ETID pinpoints the most important Defence R&T challenges that must be tackled in terms of identifying, promoting and co-ordinating technological innovation. To meet these challenges, the ETID suggests several actions grouped in four complementary dimensions:

  • Technology Dimension: It is the main dimension of the ETID. Its objective is to identify the complete set of R&T activities that will provide the technological solutions needed by the Spanish Armed Forces to fulfil their future missions. The technology dimension encompasses the establishment of the Technological Goals (TG) and associated Roadmaps.
  • Cooperation Dimension: Its objective is to foster cooperation and coordination between R&T stakeholders, both from the civil and military domains.
  • Information Dimension: Its purpose is to bolster the dissemination of information concerning Defence R&T initiatives, as well as promoting mutual knowledge between the various stakeholders.
  • Continuous improvement Dimension: Its objective is to guarantee the fulfilment of ETID’s Technology Goals and to adapt the Strategy to the forthcoming changes in the defence planning process and the technological scenario.

ETID is a fundamental tool which will support the Spanish MoD in its mission of promoting and coordinating R&D activities related with Spain’s national defence. The ultimate goal of the Strategy is to contribute efficiently to meet the required military capabilities, providing the Spanish Armed Forces with state-of-the-art military equipment, advancing the scientific and technological knowledge and supporting the national Defence Technology Industrial Base.
